I love to spend special one-on-one time with each of my kids, but honestly, “in a family of eight where there is always something brewing”, one has to be very intentional to make this happen. This week I spent some time mulling ideas over in my mind of ways to make Logan’s 14th birthday special. I always ask the kids what special meal and dessert they would like on their birthday. (I say dessert because some of them prefer things other than cake.) Several times throughout the week I said to Phil, “If we were in the States (where I drive a car) I could take Logan out for a special mother/son dinner to one of his favorite restaurants, maybe Logan’s Roadhouse…or I could go shopping and buy a few special gifts.” But since I can’t do any of those things here in the jungle, I wasn’t sure what to do. Finally, the perfect idea came to me…I would take him hunting in the jungle. Since I’ve never gone hunting before in my life, and he goes quite often, it was really the other way around….HE took ME hunting.
After a delicious breakfast of coffee and homemade waffles made by Phil, we set out on our journey. The gun was so heavy I could hardly even lift it, but during our target practice I did manage to hit the broad side of a barn—just kidding…I hit a tree trunk (no need to go into the details about how wide the tree trunk was. 🙂 We spent several hours together—-enjoying the sights and sounds of nature—and although we didn’t come home with any lunch, we did see some wild inambu and a cutia. We came home to Phil hard at work in the kitchen making a special gift for Logan—-beef jerky.
Fourteen years ago today, our son was born. After having two daughters, Phil and I were thrilled to have a boy. And his big sisters were quite proud of their new baby brother.
He quickly proved to be “all boy”. He has always loved the great outdoors, hunting and fishing. He is a hard worker, and from the time he was little he has enjoyed working alongside his dad on whatever projects might need done—whether it be yard work, construction, or maintenance type things. He is always a huge help. I appreciate his work ethic, and the fact that he takes responsibility to do a job well. Logan definitely adds an element of fun to our home. Being the only boy in a house full of girls has at times been a struggle for him, but his sisters all love him and put up with his teasing and joking around.
I am thankful God gave us a son to raise for His glory. Logan continues to grow in His walk with the Lord, and I am grateful for all the Lord is teaching him. Happy Birthday, Logan!
